Urbanization Flashcards
Impacts on urban areas
urban sprawl, lack of appropriate housing,
urban poverty,transport and congestion.
Define urban sprawl
This is the physical growth of the city at the edges, mostly caused by more and more people needing housing.
Define lack of appropriate housing
Housing shortages have led to the development of poor quality housing areas called squatter settlements.
Define urban poverty
the reality of city life may not live up to expectations and some individuals are unable to get a job.
Define transport and congestion
transport systems may fail to cope with sheer number of persons and may result as vehicles clog the streets.
Define crime
levels of crime can be high in cities particularly where they are high levels of poverty, alcoholism and drug abuse.
Strategies to prevent urbanization
Decentralisation of services, land use zoning/green belts, upgrade of rural areas, diversification of agriculture and encouraging fertility decline.
Define Decentralisation
Development which encourages movement away from capitals.
Define weather
The short term day to day condition of the atmosphere involving a description of rainfall, humidity, pressure, temperature and cloud cover.
Define climate
the long term average weather calculated over a period of 30 years.
What climate does the Caribbean experience?
a tropical maritime climate
When is wet season?
May-Nov
When is hurricane season?
June-Nov
Factors that affect the temperature of a place
Latitude, rainfall, relief, proximity to the sea, ocean currents, winds and cloud cover.
two factors that affect temperature
the angle of the overhead sun and thickness of the atmosphere
define cold fronts
cold air that sweeps across parts of the Northern Caribbean from North America in the winter and the boundary of the colder air on the ground.
tropical waves
Bolts of relatively low pressure that travels across the Atlantic Ocean along the edge of ITEZ.
hurricanes
A hurricane is a massive and very powerful tropical storm that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life.
what forms a hurricane
over warm water, when sea temperatures are at their highest, at a latitude greater than 5 degrees N or 5 of the equator, in tropical region of severe air instability, where the air is converging on the surface and rising rapidly.
What are the effects of hurricanes?
strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge.
Types of rainfall
convectional rainfall, relief rainfall,
Define convectional rainfall
occurs when the energy of the sun heats the earth’s surface and causes water to evaporate changing to water vapour, The air reaches condensation level here water condenses and turns back to liquid form. This leads to cloud formation as the clouds grow the weight of the water droplets lead to precipitation.
Define anti-cyclone
An anticylone is a large area of high atmospheric pressure.
Differentiate between between primary and tertiary activities
Primary activities deal with extracting raw materials from the natural environment whereas tertiary activities deal with provision services . Primary activities directly rely on natural resources whereas tertiary relies on secondary and primary activities.
