Q

Define urban sprawl

A

This is the physical growth of the city at the edges, mostly caused by more and more people needing housing.

3
Q

Define lack of appropriate housing

A

Housing shortages have led to the development of poor quality housing areas called squatter settlements.

Q

Strategies to prevent urbanization

A

Decentralisation of services, land use zoning/green belts, upgrade of rural areas, diversification of agriculture and encouraging fertility decline.

16
Q

define cold fronts

A

cold air that sweeps across parts of the Northern Caribbean from North America in the winter and the boundary of the colder air on the ground.

17
Q

tropical waves

A

Bolts of relatively low pressure that travels across the Atlantic Ocean along the edge of ITEZ.

18
Q

hurricanes

A

A hurricane is a massive and very powerful tropical storm that can cause widespread destruction and loss of life.

19
Q

what forms a hurricane

A

over warm water, when sea temperatures are at their highest, at a latitude greater than 5 degrees N or 5 of the equator, in tropical region of severe air instability, where the air is converging on the surface and rising rapidly.

20
Q

What are the effects of hurricanes?

A

strong winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge.

21
Q

Types of rainfall

A

convectional rainfall, relief rainfall,

22
Q

Define convectional rainfall

A

occurs when the energy of the sun heats the earth’s surface and causes water to evaporate changing to water vapour, The air reaches condensation level here water condenses and turns back to liquid form. This leads to cloud formation as the clouds grow the weight of the water droplets lead to precipitation.

23
Q

Define anti-cyclone

A

An anticylone is a large area of high atmospheric pressure.

24
Q

Differentiate between between primary and tertiary activities

A

Primary activities deal with extracting raw materials from the natural environment whereas tertiary activities deal with provision services . Primary activities directly rely on natural resources whereas tertiary relies on secondary and primary activities.

25
Two extractive industries found in the Caribbean and what country
Agriculture and mining- Jamaica
26
Difference between natural hazard and natural disaster
A natural hazard is the threat of an event that will likely have a negative impact. A natural disaster is the negative impact following an actual occurrence of natural hazard
27
Describe two characteristics each of rainfall and temperature in a tropical marine climate
Rainfall in a tropical marine climate is seasonal and relief rainfall exists. The temperature is high in a tropical marine climate and has a distinct dry season from december-may.
28
Explain two ways in which water contributes to the weathering of rocks
Hydrolysis - chemical weathering from minerals in rocks and hydrogen ions in rain water Solution= Water can act as a solvent by breaking down chemical bonds in in rocks containing salt minerals causing them to dissolve.
29
vegetation in tropics
Some plants shed their leaves during the dry season and grow new ones during the wet season. There are plants which are able to store water in order to survive the dry season. Some trees have thick bark which allows them to conserve water and also resist fire. Grasses survive by drying out during the dry season.
30
vegetation in equatorial
They often have pointed tips called drip tips which allow rain water to drain off quickly. Rainforest trees do not need thick bark to prevent moisture loss. Therefore their bark is usually thin and smooth.
