What is urbanisation?
Urbanisation is the growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas.
What is AC?
Is a country that has a high quality of life and developed.
What is LIDC?
Is a country that is low quality of life and isn’t developed.
What is EDC?
A country where the economic development is increasing.
What is a megacity?
A megacity is a urban area with over 10 million population.
What is a world city?
A world city is a city has an influence over the whole world. World cities are centres for trade and business.
What is rural-urban migration?
Rural-urban migration is the movement of people from the countryside to the cities.
Why is birth rate higher in urban areas then rural areas?
Because usually young people go to the cities to try find a job then these people have children in the cities.
economic consequences for rapid urbanisation
May not be enough jobs for everyone, leading to high level of unemployment.
People may not have access to education so they are unable to develop the skills needed to get better jobs.
social consequences for rapid urbanisation
Not enough houses for everyone then many people end up in squatter settlements that are badly built and overcrowded.
Infrastructure cant be built fast enough- people often dont have access to basic needs e.g. clean water, electricity.
Can be high levels of crime.
environmental consequences for rapid urbanisation
Rubbish isn’t often collected or it may end up in big rubbish heaps.
Sewage and toxic chemicals can get into rivers, harming wildlife.
Congestion causes increased greenhouse gases emissions and air pollution.
What is a pull factor?
A pull factor attracts people to move to an area.
What is a push factor?
A push factor makes people want to leave an area.
