what is the site
site discribes at which point the settlement is located
what is the situation
situation describes where the settlement is located in relation to surrounding fearuers such as other settelments, mountains and rivers
settlement
a settlement is a place where people live
wet-point site
an area where there is water, e.g springs, rivers
dry-point
an area where there is less water, settlements with a lot of water would choose to locate in an area without water
defence
e.g a river, a wall, situated on a hill, the defence is where a settelment is protected from outside dangers
rural settlement
rural is in the countryside. the types of settlements are isolated buildings, hamlet, village, small market towns
urban settlement
urban is in the city. the types of settlements are larger industrial towns, cities, capital city or conourbation
settlement patterns
- dispersed
- nucleated
- linear or street
dispersed
dispersed settlements could be isolated, or a group of two or three buildings this could possibly be a hamlet. the functions of a dispersed settlement are farming.
nucleated
is when several of buildings are grouped together, all the buildings would surround a building. an example is a market town all the building are surrounding the market. there is a focal point.
linear or street
linear settlements are following a road or a river.
functions
the functions of a settlement are relate to the settlements economic and social development. larger settlements usually have multiple functions (multifunctional)

- mining towns
- ports
- comercial
- tourist resorts
- indistrial
- residential
what are heirarchies
heirarchy is a way of ranking settlements. the heirarchy is based on three factors: population size, range and number of services and the sphere of influence
