Urbanisation Flashcards
Urbanisation
Urban growth
The increase in the proportion of the population living in urban centres
The increase in the total population of a town or city
Urban expansion
The increase in size or geographical footprint of a city
What are the causes of urbanisation?
- Natural population growth, birth rates are higher in urban areas
- Rural - urban migration, push and pull factors that bring people to urban areas and away from rural ones
Whats happening to the annual rates of urbanisation?
The rate is slowing down as many developing countries are becoming similar to HICs and so rely less on urban areas for jobs and other factors which brought people to them in the first place.
Urban - rural push factors could have an impact, for example: high crime rates, expensive living, and pollution.
How has urbanisation been important in “human affairs”?
- More people doing tertiary jobs
- With urbanisation comes more education (and better) for children
- In urban life there is more anonymity than in rural areas
- Services are accessible for more of the population
- More recreational opportunitites for people
- Disproportionate amount of government decisions happen in cities
- Disproportionate amount of trade is done in urban areas
