What is urbanisation?
The movement of populations from rural areas to towns and cities
What are push and pull factors?
Characteristics that push you away from your home and things that pull you towards a new one
What is a megacity?
An urban area with a population of over 10 million people
Why do levels and rates of urbanisation vary around the world?
If countries are richer they are more likely to have a higher population because they are able to afford better quality building etc..
What are the causes and consequences of the growth of Manchester in the 19th century?
Causes:
The Industrial Revolution began
Cotton fibre began to be imported from Liverpool.
Consequences:
Over crowding, slums and disease
What are the Characteristics of shanty towns?
They are:
Informal - no plan
Illegal - they do not own the land
Building materials - built from salvaged or recycled materials
Location in city - found on marginal la d
Who lives there? People who can not afford accommodation
What jobs do people do - most people work for the informal sector
What is the difference between raster and vector data?
Raster is shown as pixels and constructs the background.
Vector data is made of points which are joined together to form lines. It is used to show map features on top of this background.
What is the GIS (geological information system)? And what is its structure?
A way of using digital maps to present and analyse data.
The data exists in layers.

What was the decline of Manchester’s population in the 20th century?
Other countries began to make cloth for cheaper prices
Factories shut down and crime rates rose
People moved to other towns and cities to find work
What caused Manchester’s population to rise again?
They promoted sport, business, modernised houses and a team service
What are two advantage of GIS over traditional map?
Helps us to fight crime, allows businesses to deliver products, shows flood risks, and house for a prospective house buyer
