Urbanisation =
Urbanisation = the movement of populations from rural areas to cities/towns
Rural to urban migration =
Rural to urban migration = the movement of people from countryside to city areas
Pull factor =
Pull factor = positive things that attract people to a place
Push factor =
Push factor = negative things that make people want to move away
Mega city =
Mega city = a city with a population of over 10 million (eg. Tokyo + Shanghai)
Pull factors for moving to a town/city (urbanisation)
- more job
- higher wages
- better living conditions
- better education
- better health services
- better facilities
- less chance of natural disasters
Push factors include…
Opposite to pull factors:
- lower wages, crop failure, unemployment, poor living conditions
MANCHESTER= CAUSES OF GROWTH…
In 19th century: many ppl moved to Manchester from Ireland to ESCAPE FAMINE = population increased + Industrial Revolution meant that there were more jobs so everyone was payed well
MANCHESTER= CONSEQUENCES OF GROWTH…
- crime rates increased 📈= factories shut down + ppl moved away from Manchester
Manchester’s population (increased/declined) in the 20th century… + why?!
DECLINED!!
- because other countries were making the same things + selling them for a lot less (cheaper)
Name a regeneration project in Manchester…
Ancoats= undergone regeneration —> old Industrial buildings restored and repurposed into flats, art galleries and music venues 🏭
SHANTY TOWNS= factors of them…
- hand built
- constructed on fringes of large cities
- built on land that residents don’t own = ILLEGAL!
Schemes to improve Shanty Towns x2
Micro- loans = help small business owners expand their business- benefiting the economy of the town

Site and service schemes= allows residents the chance to go and buy a pice of land at a lower rate.
Push factors of shanty towns…
- often lack of basic sanitation (lack of main water a sewage)
- no waste disposal system (rubbish builds up on streets)
- no electricity (lighting, cooking and heat or bided by fires)
- ILLEGAL
Pull factors of shanty towns…
- community spirit (very strong + close + supportive)
- shanty town dwellers have to improve houses over time (= build good DIY skills)
- informal sector unregulated (= encourages creativity)
- cheap!! (But illegal!)
