Rural - sparsely populated, open spaces, countryside. Urban - densely populated, towns or cities, better services

Is the increase in the number of people living in towns or cities
Where is urbanisation happening?
All over the world, specifically LICs.
Causes of urbanisation
Push and pull factors, migration
Push and pull factors
Push - make people want to move out of their country. Pull - make people want to move into a different country
Examples of push factors
Natural disasters, lack of opportunities, war and conflict, drought, mechanization, lack of employment
Examples of pull factors
More jobs, higher wages, leisure activities, better healthcare, following family members, better quality of life
Mega cities
Over 10 million people, most of them are located in LICs, no mega cities in Australia
Natural increase
Birth rate - death rate = natural increase
Increase in birth rate
Migration involves young adults, lack of contraception, in the uk migrant groups have higher fertility rates
Lower death rate
Higher life expectancy due to better healthcare and clean water, improved medical facilities
Delhi
It is in India and New Delhi is the capital, over 30 million people, 1000 people move there every day
Why do people move to Delhi?
Most come from rural areas, they want to work in tech companies, as taxi drivers, tour guides, ICT companies are growing, wages are higher, better healthcare, better job opportunities
Social impacts
Lots of slums, overcrowding, limited access to clean water, lots of diseases, no education, high death rate
Environmental impacts
A lot of air pollution from cars and factories, 10000 tones of waste is produced every day, water systems are polluted
