What are the characteristics of the CBD?

A

High/multi-storey buildings.
Expensive land values.
Department stores or specialist shops, like jewellers.
Shopping malls and pedestrian precincts.
Cultural/historical buildings, museums and castles.

limited convenience shopping facilities

Why is the CBD dominated by retail and offices?

A

Retail and businesses are the only land users that can afford the high land values.
Retail locates here for the volume of pedestrians.
There is a high volume of pedestrians because the CBD is very accessible with transport routes leading there.

What are the characteristics of the suburbs ?

A

Suburban houses are usually larger than inner city terraces and most have a garden. Typically, they are detached or semi detached and the roads around them are arranged in cul de sacs and wide avenues. Land prices are generally cheaper than in the CBD and inner city, although some areas are expensive.

Why does the inner city have a low quality of environment (derelict and run down)?

A

Housing stock is the oldest in the city, they are low quality and high density some may be council (social) housing.
Industry has led to higher levels of pollution.
Industry has now moved out of the inner city, this has led to many people unemployed. This leads to higher levels of crime.
