1.1 Population distribution
The way the population is spread out across an area.
1.2 Sparsely populated
Few people in an area, e.g. per km squared.
1.3 Densely populated
Man people in an area, e.g. per km squared.
1.4 Core city
A city with regional importance, attracting people from elsewhere.
1.5 Primary industry
Extracting raw materials, e.g. farmer / fisherman, coal miner.
1.6 Secondary industry
Manufacturing raw materials into a product, e.g. bread factor.
1.7 Tertiary industry
Providing a service, e.g. selling bread in a shop.
1.8 Quaternary industry
Research and development and high tech industries, e.g. app developer.
1.9 Integrated Transport System (ITS)
The public transport network in London joins together buses, trams and trains.
1.10 Urban greening
The process of creating more parks and planting trees in a city.
1.11 Urban sprawl
When a city expands into the countryside, building on greenfield sites.
1.12 Green belt
The circle of protected land around a city to prevent building on greenfield sites.
1.13 Greenfield sites
Land never previously built on.
1.14 Brownfield sites
Land that has been built on previously
1.15 Deprivation
A lack of income, education, healthcare provision, employment and poor crime statistics in an area.
1.16 Regeneration
The process of improving an area by creating new industry and changing the provision of buildings.
1.17 Sustainable city
A city that has been developed to meet the economic, social and environmental needs of the future

Meeting the needs of the current generation without compromising the needs of the future generation.
