Urban environments Flashcards
What is a Millionaire City?
A city with at least 1 million people living there
Do more people live in urban environments now as opposed to 50 years ago?
Yes.
Give four reasons why Megacities grow
Migration
Population growth / natural increase
Multiplier Effect
Economic development
Define natural increase
When the birth rate is higher than the death rate, meaning more people are born than people who die, meaning the population increases
How does economic development help to grow megacities
Increase in secondary and tertiary industries leads to economic growth leading to urbanisation.
Define Economies of Scale
Where larger cities have financial savings on transport and communications for both people and businesses rather than smaller cities. This is because the distances within one megacity are less than the distances between many smaller cities.
What is the multiplier effect?
Economic growth encourages populations in cities to grow. More jobs are available due to increased demand, and more services are needed for an increasing population.
What does the term ‘cores’ mean?
‘cores’ are the central region in an economy with good communications and a high population density. They are, for examples, megacities.
What does the term ‘periphery’ mean?
‘peripheries’ are the regions around the core that have not benefitted from globalization, global wealth, and the growth of a megacity.
What does the term ‘global city’ mean
A global city is an urban centre that enjoys competitive advantages and serves as a hub within a globalised economic system.
