upthrust n floatation Flashcards
what is upthrhust?
an upward force on an object due to the fluid
what is upthrust caused by?
the pressure of the fluid
why does the water level rise when you put an object into a container?
the object displaces some of the water
the more the object is lowered into water (2)
the bigger the volume of water displaced, the bigger the upthrust
what happens when the object is fully immersed?
the volume of the water displaced is = volume of object
when does an object sink?
if it’s weight is greater than the upthrust on it when it’s fully immersed
when does an object float?
when its weight is = to upthrust
(denstiy) when does an object sink?
when density is greater than density of water
(denstiy) when does an object float?
when density is less than density of water
what does the pressure at the point in a fluid depend on?
density of fluid and depth of fluid at that point
