Uptake and storage of other metals Flashcards
1
Q
How are Cu and Zn stored?
A
In metallothionines (Cys rich)
2
Q
Uptake of Cr and V
A
Via anion channels as chromate and vanadate
Then reduced by glutathione
(But Cr(III) in cells can bind to DNA and act as a carcinogen)
3
Q
Is Cr essential?
A
Yes
Cr deficiency leads to impaired glucose tolerance
It is thought Cr binds to chromodulin as a carboxylate-bridged Cr4 cluster that then binds to the insulin receptors to stimulate glucose uptake
4
Q
Transport of other metals
A
Mugineic acid
