Upper Gi histology Flashcards
what areas of the body are classed under upper GI?
mouth to duodenum
what epithelium covers the oral cavity, oropharynx, laryngopharynx?
stratified squamous epithelium
what epithelium covers the nasal cavity and nasopharynx?
respiratory
what epithelium makes the anterior 2/3 of the tongue?
thin stratified squamous - ventral
thick stratified squamous with papillae - dorsal
what epithelium makes the posterior 2/3 of tongue?
smooth stratified squamous
what is present in the submucosa of the posterior tongue?
substantial lymphoid aggregates
what are the types of papillae on the tongue?
fungiform
circumvallate
foliate
filiform
what papillae dont have taste buds?
filiform
what is found in the spaces between papillae?
opening of serous von Ebner glands
what is included in the ring of lymphoid tissues of the pharynx?
palatine tonsils
lingual tonsils
tubal tonsils
pharyngeal tonsils (adenoids)
what is the ring of tonsils called?
Walders ring
where is the GI tract?
oesophagus to anal canal
what are the 4 layers of the GI tract?
mucosa
submucosa
muscularis externa
serosa or adventitia
what is GI mucosa composed of?
epithelium
lamina propria - loose connective tissue
muscularis mucosae - thin layer of smooth muscle
what is the submucosa?
dense irregular connective tissue
what is the muscularis externa?
2 thick layers of smooth muscle
- inner circular layer
- outer longitudinal layer
what is serosa/ adventitia?
outer layer of connective tissue that either suspends the digestive tract or attaches it to other organs.
what does the submucosa of the oesophagus contain?
glands
describe the gastro-oesophageal junction?
abrupt transition from stratified squamous epithelium of oesophagus to the simple columnar epithelium of the cardia of the stomach
