What does the upper GI include?
Oesophagus, stomach and intestines.
What is chronic gastritis?
Ongoing inflammation of the stomach
Symptoms of gastritis?
Upper abdominal pain, indigestion or bloating, nausea or vomiting, belching, loss of appetite, weight loss.
What is Helicobacter pylori?
An infection acquired via the faecal-oral route.
What are peptic ulcers normally caused by?
H. pylori or NSAIDs.
What are the complications of a peptic ulcer?
Bleeding leading to anaemia, Massive haematemesis, Perforation leading to peritonitis.
What is Barrett’s Oesophagus?
The normal stratified squamous epithelium lining of the oesophagus is replaced with columnar epithelium with goblet cells.
What are the risk factors for Oesophageal cancer?
Alcohol, Tobacco, caustic injury and achalasia.
Symptoms of Adenocarcinoma stomach?
Weight loss, anorexia, anaemia and haemorrhage.
What is Coeliac disease?
Extensive mucosal disease related to sensitivity to gluten.
How is Coeliac disease diagnosed?
Via a serological blood test and biopsy.
Symptoms of Coeliac disease?
Pain and discomfort in digestive tract, Constipation and diarrhoea, Failure to thrive, anaemia, fatigue.
