- Drugs (aspirin, NSAIDS- ibu, CORTICOSTEROIDS)
- esophageal varices
- stomach/duodenum ulcers/cancer
- systemic diseases like leukemia

A
- hematemesis (vomiting of blood)
- melena
- hard abdomen
- soft BS
- could have signs of shock.

how to treat an Upper Gi Bleed
A
- check vital signs to make sure they are not in shock (decreased bP, Increased HR and RR)
- IV for fluid replacement to increase vascular volume
- packed RBC or fresh frozen plasma
- saline solution
- measure urine output (greatest way to determine organ function)
- surgery depending on time, amount, size

- Type and screen within 72 hours of giving the blood
- vitals before, 5 min in, and 15 min in, every hour, and when it is done
- pt identifiers
- consent
- allergies
- transfusion reactions in the past
- double identifiers
- date that blood expires
- check blood bag in general
- monitor for vitals to change
