Upper extremity blocks Flashcards
indications for a superficial cervical block
superficial surgery of the neck and shoulder, thyroid, CEA
landmarks needed for a superficial cervical block
- mastoid process
- transverse process of C6
- posterior border of SCM muscle
complications of superficial cervical block
- infection
- hematoma
- LA toxicity
- nerve injury
indications for an interscalene block
- shoulder, lateral 2/3 of clavicle, proximal humerous, shoulder joint
landmarks for an interscalene block
- sternal head of SCM
- clavicular head of SCM
- upper border of cricoid muscle
- clavicle
complications of an interscalene block
- neuropathy
- mechanical plexus injury
- infection
- pneumothorax
- LA toxicity
- phrenic nerve block
- horners syndrome
indications for a supraclavicular block
- any surgery of upper extremity not involving the shoulder
- excellent for elbow and hand
contraindications of supraclavicular block
- no bilateral block
- can = resp emergency from bilateral phrenic nerve block
landmarks needed for a supraclavicular block
- lateral insertion of SCM to clavicle
- clavicle
- patients midline
complications of supraclavicular block
- phrenic nerve block
- horners syndrome
- pneumo
- LA toxicity
- nerve damage
infraclavicular block indications
- any surgery of the arm up to the shoulder but not including the shoulder
complications of infraclavicular block
- hematoma
- nerve damage
- LA toxicity
- pneumo
indications for an axillary block
- surgery of the forearm, wrist, or hand
branches of the brachial plexus that run along axillary artery
- radial, ulnar, median
- musculocutaneous exits early and may not get blocked
complications of axillary block
- hematoma
- nerve damage
- LA toxicity
indications for a wrist block
- carpel tunnel
- hand
- finger
location of median nerve with wrist block
- between tendons of palmaris and flexor carpi radialis
location of radial nerve with wrist block
- medial aspect of brachioradialis muscle
locations of ulnar nerve with wrist block
- between ulnar artery and tendon of felxor carpi ulnaris
complications of wrist block
- nerves are in a tight compartment
- dont give more than 5ml LA
- be cautions with intraneural injection
what blocks cant you use epi on
- on done on the elbow and down
