Upper Canada Flashcards
Why were there economic tensions in Upper Canada?
Upper Canada’s lack of infrastructure and capital investment and it’s small population meant a struggle for revenue. Trying to build canals and roads led to a cash strapped government. The legislative assembly were side stepped in an attempt to raise taxes and instead sold land to the Canada Company in an attempt to pay salaries of officials.
Why were there tensions around the family compact in Upper Canada?
It was around the issue of clergy reserves allotted to the Anglican church. The Anglican church was strongly supported by the Family Compact who exercised power for their own benefit. By the majority of UC being mainly protestant, this meant that there could be no support of the clergy reserve system. 1/7 goes to Clergy Reserve too.
