upland and lowland areas in the uk Flashcards
upland
above 250m above sea level
lowland
below 250m above sea level
sub-aerial processes
land based processes that occur above the coastline (weathering and mass movement)
weathering
the breakdown of rocks in situ. by natural processes
mass movements
the movement of material down-slope due to gravity
biological weathering
rocks are broken down due to living things (plant roots, animals burrow into rocks)
chemical weathering
rocks are broken down due to chemical reactions (acid rain, oxidation)
mechanical/ physical weathering
rocks are broken down due to physical force (freeze-thaw)
dartmoor (upland)
overtime granite became exposed on the surface as a result of glacial erosion/ mass movement, joints in the granite expose rock to freeze-thaw weathering (broke down rock), continued until tors (hill/rocky peak) we see today
malham (upland)
limestone is permeable sedimentary rock +contain joints, rainwater passes through joints and cause chemical weathering, widening and deeoening of cracks form limestone pavements, joints are widend to creatw dips (grykes), dips expose blocks of rockes (clints)
