Up - Sterilization Flashcards
[Sterilization] What are the two ways of sterilization of media and what are their benefits and drawbacks?
Batch: Autoclave the entire thing, indirect heating through walls, direct with steam injection.
+ Low technical complexity
- Uneven heat transfer in large volume (more at the edges)
- High energy consumption
- Require more time
- Risk of reaction with/degradation of medium components over time
Continous: Pump the medium through a heated coil for a short amount of time. Indirectly with heat exchangers or direct steam injection
+ Low thermal stress for the medium
+ Low energy consumption
+ Fast
- High technical complexity
- More cleaning
[Sterilization] What is the drawback of using direct heting via steam injection for sterilization of media?
Contamination
[Sterilization] How can air be sterilized? (2)
Depth filters: Level of sterilization depending on depth of filter
Membrane filter: Level of sterilization depending on pore size (often 0.2 um)
