Deadly force
any force likely to cause death or serious physical injury
Non-deadly force
Any level of force other than deadly force
Individual self-defense
Use of force to defend oneself or others from the imminent threat of physical injury
Unit self defense
Act of defending a particular unit of ur military or LE assets from imminent danger
National self defense
Defense of the US, US forces, US persons and their property, US assets from a hostile act or demonstration of hostile intent
Guiding principles
Only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used. Force shall not be used where assigned duties can be discharged without it. Excessive force may never be used; however, nothing in the application of the CG UoF policy shall be construed as to require to meet force with dual or lesser force.
5 non deadly force circumstances
Individual/unit self defense
Compel compliance CG has authority to issue
Prevent federal crime
Effect lawful arrest, prevent escape when PC someone committed a federal crime
Prevent theft/destruction of property CG has authority to protect
commandant’s guiding principles
only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used.

demeanor, activity are primary factors in determining level of force used. other considerations are size, capabilities, number of officers, number of subjects

unconsciousness, obvious disfigurement, impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty
passive compliant
subject who follows officer’s verbal directions
passive resistor
subject who foes not follow officer’s verbal direction, but offers no physical resistance to officer’s attempts to gain control
