What drug is used as an immediate prevention of pregnancy?
- alizin
When can alizin be used?
- before 45 days of gestation
What other drug is available to terminate pregnancy but is off-market?
- Mesalin (oestradiol benzoate)
How can you determine if mating has actually occured?
- sperm on vaginal smear
How is a vaginal smear carried out?
- Saline moistened swab placed in vagina for one minute
- Swab tip cut off and placed into 0.5 ml saline in test tube
- Allow to stand for 10 minutes
- Squeeze the swab dry against side of tube
- Centrifuge saline at 2000 rpm for 10 minutes
- Stain sediment with DiffQuik
-> detects 100% bitches mated within last 24h
-> detects 75% bitches mated within last 48h
If the owner did not want to breed in the future, what could be done to prevent pregnancy?
- spay (best to do in anoestrus)
- progestogen (temporary, q5months)
- suprelorin (temporary, q6-12months)
What are the risks of neutering in oestrous?
- bleeding is more likely
- fragile tissues
If the dog presented 2 weeks after the alleged breeding, what treatment options are available?
- Aglepristone (alizin) will still work
- Spay
- PG and prolactin inhibitor would not work
When can PG and prolactin inhibitors be used to terminate a pregnancy?
- after 28d
