Untitled Deck Flashcards
What are the groups in the periodic table?
Vertically Columns (1 to 18), elements in the same group have similar properties because they have the same # of valence elections
What are periods on the periodic table?
Horizontal rows (1 to 7), elements in the same period have the same # of electron shells.
Where and what are metals in the periodic table?
On the left and middle, they are shiny, conduct electricity, and re malleable.
Where and what are the non-metals in the periodic table?
On the right side, they are dull, brittle, and do not conduct electricity well.
Where and what are the metalloids found?
Elements with properties of both metals and non-metals, found a long the staircase line.
What are alkali metals?
Group 1 elements, very reactive, soft
What are the alkaline earth metals?
Group 2 elements, not as soft, still reactive
What is the Boron family?
Group 13 mostly metals, boron is special
What are the Carbon Family?
Group 14 Important for life
What are the Nitrogen Family?
Group 15 Most of the air
What are the Oxygen Family?
Group 16 Helps us breath
What are the Halogens?
Group 17 Very reactive, kills germs
What are Noble gases?
Group 18 Do not react, used in lights
What are Transition Metals?
Groups 3-12 Strong and useful metals
What is the significance of the staircase line?
It separates the metals (left) from the non-metals (right) and makes the location of metalloids.
