Untitled Deck Flashcards
What is data communication?
Data communication is the exchange of data between two devices via some form of transmission medium, such as a wire cable. It involves sharing information locally or remotely.
What are the four fundamental characteristics of an effective data communication system?
Delivery, Accuracy, Timeliness, Jitter
What are the five components of a data communication system?
Message, Sender, Receiver, Transmission medium, Protocol
What are the three types of data flow in communication?
Simplex, Half-Duplex, Full-Duplex
What is a network?
A network is the interconnection of a set of devices capable of communication. Devices can be hosts or connecting devices.
What are the three main network criteria?
Performance, Reliability, Security
What are the two types of connections in a network?
Point-to-Point, Multipoint
What are the five basic physical network topologies?
Star, Bus, Ring, Mesh, Tree
What are the advantages of a Star Network Topology?
Isolation of devices, Easy troubleshooting, Efficient data traffic management by the central hub
What are the disadvantages of a Bus Network Topology?
Single point of failure, Limited scalability, Troubleshooting difficulties
What is a Ring Network Topology?
A network configuration where each device is connected to exactly two other devices, forming a circular data path.
What are the advantages of a Mesh Network Topology?
Decentralized management, Redundancy, High reliability and scalability
What is a Tree Network Topology?
A hierarchical network structure resembling a tree, with a root node, intermediate nodes, and leaf nodes.
What are the differences between LAN, MAN, and WAN?
LAN - Small area, MAN - City or large campus, WAN - Large geographical areas
What is an Internetwork?
An internetwork is formed when two or more networks are connected.
What are the key elements of a protocol?
Syntax, Semantics, Timing
What are the applications of a Bus Network Topology?
Small office networks, Temporary networks for events, Early Ethernet networks
What are the disadvantages of a Tree Network Topology?
Single point of failure, Complexity in large networks, Higher cost due to additional cabling
What is Jitter in data communication?
Jitter refers to the variation in packet arrival time, causing uneven delay in audio or video transmission.
What is the role of a Protocol in data communication?
A protocol is a set of rules that govern data communication, ensuring agreement on data transmission.
