Untitled Deck Flashcards
When and why did the cognitive approach develop?
The cognitive approach developed in the 1950s as a response to the behaviourist’s failure to acknowledge mental processes.
What areas of human behaviour does the cognitive approach investigate?
The cognitive approach investigates areas such as memory, perception, and thinking.
Define schema
Schema = a mental framework of beliefs and expectations that influence cognitive processing.
Example: you have a schema for a chair - something with legs that you can sit on.
How does schema develop with age?
Babies are born with simple motor schemas for innate behaviours. As we age, schemas become more detailed and sophisticated due to environmental experiences.
What mental representations do adults develop?
Adults develop mental representations for various situations, such as what happens in a restaurant or what a typical zombie looks like.
What is a strength of schema?
Schemas help us interpret incoming information quickly and effectively, serving as a mental shortcut.
What is a limitation of schema?
Schemas can lead to distortion of information, resulting in perceptual errors like inaccuracies in eyewitness testimonies.
Example: errors when perceiving optical illusions, such as the Rat-Man experiment.
