Untitled Deck Flashcards
What is a neap tide?
A neap tide is a tide with the least difference between high and low tides.
It happens during the first and last quarters of the moon.
What is an orbital period?
The orbital period is the time it takes for an object to complete one full orbit around another object.
For example, Earth’s orbital period around the sun is one year.
What are lunar phases?
Lunar phases are the different shapes the moon seems to have as it orbits the Earth.
1 full cycle takes 29.5 days.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon.
Can only happen during certain full moons.
What is orbital velocity?
Orbital velocity is the speed at which an object moves around another object in space. It helps to keep objects in their orbits.
What role does gravity play in the Earth-Moon-Sun system?
Gravity keeps objects, like the Earth, moon, and sun, in their orbits around each other by pulling them together.
How does uneven heating of the Earth affect seasons?
Uneven heating due to the Earth’s tilt creates temperature variations, causing different seasons as different parts of the Earth receive varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year.
What is the difference between rotation and revolution?
Rotation causes day and night as the Earth spins on its axis, while revolution causes the Earth to orbit the sun, creating our year.
What is gravity?
Gravity is the force that pulls things towards each other. On Earth, it keeps us on the ground and makes things fall when we drop them.
How do mass and distance impact gravitational pull?
Gravitational pull increases with mass and decreases with distance.
Objects with more mass have stronger gravitational pulls, while increasing distance weakens gravitational attraction.
How do you identify the type of eclipse?
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking sunlight. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon, casting a shadow on the moon.
How does the tilt of the Earth impact seasons?
The Earth’s tilt causes different parts of the Earth to receive varying amounts of sunlight throughout the year, leading to seasons.
What is waxing?
Waxing is when the illuminated part of the moon appears to be getting bigger.
What is rotation?
Rotation is when an object spins around an imaginary line called an axis.
For instance, the Earth rotates, making day and night.
How do you determine the phase of the moon?
The phase of the moon depends on its position relative to the Earth and the sun.
For example, a new moon occurs when the moon is between the Earth and the sun.
