What is ‘Man vs. society’?
A struggle between a character and the rules or law that govern the society in which he or she lives.
What is ‘exposition’?
Characters, setting, and basic situation introduced at the beginning of the story.
What is ‘resolution’?
Problems are resolved and story comes to an end.
What is ‘plot’?
Events in a story.
What is ‘conflict’?
A struggle between opposing forces.
What is ‘Man vs. self’?
A struggle between a character and his or her conscience.
What is ‘Man vs. man’?
A mental or physical struggle between two or more characters.
What is ‘Man vs. nature’?
A struggle between the character and elements of nature that are beyond his or her control.
What is ‘Man vs. unknown’?
A struggle with the unknown, beyond human comprehension, may have to do with magic or fate.
What is ‘setting’?
Time and place in a story.
What is ‘rising action’?
Events leading up to the climax.
What is ‘climax’?
Turning point, towards the end of the story, opposing forces come together and the reader doesn’t know what will happen.
What is ‘falling action’?
Events after the climax leading to the resolution.
What is ‘theme’?
Message in a story.
What is ‘direct characterization’?
Directly learn about a character.
