Untitled Deck Flashcards
What is the Solar System?
A star and all the objects that orbit it, including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets.
What defines a planet?
Large natural objects made of rocks or gases that orbit stars. A planet must orbit the sun, be large enough for its gravity to mold it into a spherical shape, and have an orbit free of other small objects.
What is a moon?
A natural object that orbits a planet.
What is the Sun?
A star at the center of our solar system that provides light and heat for life on Earth. It is a body of hot gases that makes its own light and heat.
What is an orbit?
A regular, repeating path that one object in space takes around another one.
What is a star?
An exploding ball of burning gas held together by gravity.
What does it mean to revolve?
To go around; to move in a circle or orbit.
For example, ‘The planets revolve around the sun.’
What is a shadow?
A dark area on a bright surface caused by something blocking a source of light.
What does it mean to cast?
To cause light or shadow to appear somewhere; to give forth; direct or project.
What is a claim?
A statement that you make that is true or that you think is true.
What is evidence?
A collection of facts, data, and observations that support or contradict a scientific hypothesis or theory.
What are observations?
The ability to pay close attention to something.
What are patterns of movement?
Something that happens the same way more than once; it repeats.
What are seasons?
Distinct times of year with unique weather and daylight (autumn, winter, spring, summer).
As Earth moves around the Sun, it spins in a slightly tilted position (23.5 degrees). This tilt causes our seasons as different parts of the planet are angled towards or away from the Sun’s light.
What does it mean to rotate?
To turn or spin around a center point (axis).
