Doesn’t have pre-planned questions, the interviewer can build rapport and have a free flowing discussions and they provide qualitative data
Practical Strengths of Unstructured interviews
Can develop hypothesis
Flexible and can develop their questions.
Good at researching into criminals and deviant groups as they may be skeptical at first
Practical disadvantages of unstructured interviews
Time consuming
interviewers need to be trained (money)
some responses may be irrelevant and take up time
is the time it takes worth it for the high validity
Ethical Strengths of unstructured interviews
Oakley - most ethical way of researching due to the trust built
Right to withdraw, informed consent and anonymity can be secured
