Unseen Fieldwork Flashcards
Random spampling
Where samples are chosen completely randomly (eg. Picking up pebbles on a breach)
Systematic sampling
Where samples are taken at regular intervals (eg. Measuring river discharge every 10m)
Stratified sampling
Where samples are chosen from different groups to get a good overall representation (eg. Collecting views of people in different age groups about a local issue)
Validity
The degree to which conclusions are reliable and reasonably correct
Reliability
The extent to whether the results could be reproduced
Accuracy
How close the results are to the true answer
Evaluating methods
Collected the data wanted?
How much?
Issues?
Improvements?
Evaluating results
What was expected, why?
Enough?
Anomalies?
Evaluating conclusions
Do anomalies weaken the conclusion?
How can a strengthened conclusion be made?
Primary data
Data you collect yourself
Secondary data
Data collected by others
