Briefly explain the Harlem Renaissance 1910-30s?

A

Centred in Harlem, Manhattan ,NYC- Black artists, writers and musicians used talents to work for civil rights. Wrote for black reader (never done before) Redefined how African Americans were viewed. key authors - Hurston and Wright- she wanted strong black characters in literature, he wanted too show his political and social ideas.

A

Stream of consciousness, unreliable narrator, non-chronological, unreliable narrator supplanted omniscient trustworthy narrator of previous centuries.

A

Post WW1- disillusioned, no sense of purpose following atrocities of the war, went to Paris to write: Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, Fitz- free to trash talk US while in Paris.

A

New way of looking at society- carefree, speakeasies, prohibition and flappers.

A

“Economic” way of writing (doesn’t say unnecessary stuff), influenced Fitzgerald who appreciated this style of writing but used more imagist style.

A

1776 declaration of independence- equality of “all men”. Set lofty and intangible goals = disappointment and failure. Not the dream that betrayed them but capitalism.
