War fought to restore unity to the nation and secure new Western Territories from slave-owners. A war for Southern Confederate states to assert autonomous right. Tensions over slavery, territorial and sectional political control were present from the start of the American nation.

Signifies enormous pace of technological, economic and social change that took place in wake of WW1. Introduction to prohibition in 1920. A transition in societal attitudes towards women and understanding of traditional gender roles. Prosperity and economic stability built on increasing isolationism in American politics and fears on immigration. A time of unequal prosperity.

F. Scott Fitzgerald widely credited with coining the term, first using it in the title of his 1922 short story collection ‘Tales of the Jazz Age’ - jazz music and dance styles rapidly gained nationwide popularity

Had severe effects in countries both rich and poor. Unemployment rose to 25%. Market crash marked the beginning of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, and lost opportunities for economic growth. Was a result of Wall Street Crash and Dust Bowl.
