Universe Vocabulary Flashcards
Newton’s First Law
The motion of an object does not change unless a force is applied to it
Force
Any push or pull on an object
The Law of Gravity
There is an attraction between any two objects
Unbalanced Forces
A force that changes the position, speed or direction of the object to which it is applied.
Air Resistance
The force that opposes objects being pulled to the Earth by gravity
Free Fall
Occurs when only the force of gravity is acting on an object.
The Law of Universal Gravitation
All objects in the universe attract each other through gravitational force.
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Weight
How strong gravity pulls on an object (the amount of gravitational force)
Spring Tide
Occur 2 times a month, during a full and new moon when the Earth, Sun, and Moon are lined up.
Neap Tide
Occur at the first and third quarters of the Moon when the Sun and Moon pull at right angles to each other.
Rapid Expansion of the Universe Theory
The theory states that the universe originated sometime between 10 billion and 20 billion years ago from an enormous explosion of a small volume of matter at extremely high density and temperature.
Scientific Theory
An explanation or model backed by results obtained from many tests or experiments.
