universe Flashcards
what is the universe?
is everything that exist, including planets, stars, moons, galaxies, even if we don’t see it
what is the milky way?
it’s the galaxy we live in, also called The Galaxy. The name comes from ancient Greeks. it’s a barred spiral galaxy.
what is a galaxy?
is a large group, called “cluster”, of stars, their planets, gas and dust, and they’re all together thanks to gravity.
what is a star?
it’s a giant ball of very hot gas, like hydrogen and helium, held together by the gravity. the stars shine with their own light thanks to a process called nuclear fusion.
what make the stars different?
they are different in size, temperature, colour, brightness, the amount of matter they contain.
what types of stars do we have?
stars can be blue (when it born and it means that it’s hot), yellow (sun) and red (it’s cold) before it dies. we have blue giant, supergiant, red giant, white dwarfs and red dwarf
what is luminosity?
is the amount of energy given off by the star and it’s related to brightness
what does deamer means
poco luminoso
what are constellations
are patterns of stars and whole segments in the sky that, fit together, form a complete sphere. they are 88
what is the sun?
the sun is our local star, a great spinning ball of hot and glowing gas, and it give us light and heat. it’s the biggest and heaviest object in the whole solar system
what is there on the surface of the sun?
we have: a bubbly surface, solar prominence (a loop of gas), sunspot (dark, cool patches), solar flare (bursts of energy)
what is there inside the sun?
the core (generates the heat and the light of the Sun), a radiative zone, a convective zone and the photosphere, all are surrounded by the corona and the cromosphere
what is a solar eclipse?
is when the moon is between the sun and the earth
what is a moon eclipse?
is when the earth is between sun and moon
what is the solar system composed by?
1) sun
2)Planets= large and round objects that spin around the Sun, and they’re called after god and godness. They are: mercury (the nearest to the sun), Venus, Earth, Moon. these are near the sun and are called “rocky planets”, the others (like mars, jupiter, uranus, saturn, neptune) further the sun are called “gas planets”
3) comets: balls of ice and rock
4) asteroids: are space rocks
