Units 12-14: The Nature and Properties of Solutions Flashcards
Define a Solution.
A homogenous mixture of substances composed of at least one solute and one solvent.
Define Solute.
A substance that is dissolved, such as NaCl (salt).
Define Solvent.
The medium in which a solute is dissolved, such as H2O (water).
Define Homogenous Mixture.
A mixture that appears as one substance.
Define Heterogeneous Mixture.
A mixture that has particles large enough to block or scatter light waves.
What is the solvent of all aqueous solutions?
Water, my dude.
What 2 groups can compounds but classified into? Define them.
· Electrolytes = If their aqueous solutions conduct electricity.
· Nonelectrolytes = If their aqueous solutions do not conduct electricity.
Define Acids.
Molecular compounds in their pure form but in aqueous solution. They conduct electricity.
