Volunteers - pro Brit

A

A part time military force, which was raised by local initiative during 1778-1779 preserve law and order when the majority of troops were fighting in the American revolution. Soon became the military arm of the Patriot movement, mainly made up of Protestant middle class. Not as influential after 1793

Peep of Day Boys - Pro British

A

A protestant mainly work class organization estbalished in 1779. Active in sectarian, agrarian struggles in County Armagh. Orange order took over from them in 1795.

A

Secret society established in 1784 created as opponents of the Peep of Day boys. Catholic organisation which had strong links with the United Irishman

Orange Order - Pro British

A

Created in 1795 as a protestant political society dedicated to the sustaining of the ‘glorious and immortal memory’ of King William III and his victory at Battle of the Boyne. Replaced Peep of Day boys after ‘Battle of the Diamond’ 1795
