Unite A Sec 1 Flashcards
Pure Substance
All the particles that make up the substance are identical
Ex. Element or Compound
Element
A pure substance that can not be broken down into other substances
Mixture
Combination of 2 or more pure substances
Mechanical Mixture
- Also known as a heterogeneous mixture
- The different substances in the mixture are visible
Suspension
- A mixture where the elements are in different states
- Where the large elements in the mixture do not dissolve ni matter how hard you stir
Ex. Dirt in water
Colloid
- The substance is mostly dissolved but not completely leaving a foggy mixture
Ex. Milk
Solution
- Known as a homogeneous mixture
- The mixture looks the same throughout
How to Identify a Pure Substance
- Melting point
- Boiling point
- State
- Colour
Chemical Reaction
The result of a substance or substances when they react together and create a different substance
How to Identify When a Chemical Reaction Has Occurred
- Involve the production of a new substance or substances with new physical properties
- Involve the flow of energy
- Cause a phase change Ex. The formation of gasses or bubbles
Malleability
The ability of a substances to be deformed or molded into a different shape
Ductility
How well an object can take stress with deformation and flexibility
Solubility
How well a gas, solid or liquid can dissolve into a substance. Ex. How well salt can dissolve in water
