Después de haber pasado el día en casa de su madre, José lleva a su novia y a Juan a la casa.
After having spent the day at his mother’s, Jose takes his fiancée and Juan home.
Primero deja a Juan que vive más cerca y luego lleva a Carmen.
First he lets out Juan,l who lives closer, and then takes Carmen.
Pero cuando va solo con ella, empieza a manejar muy rápido.
But when he goes alone (only) with her, he begins to drive too fast.
Esto le preocupa a Carmen y entonces ella le dice que debe irmás despacio.
This worries Carmen and so she tells him he ought to slow down.
Pero José no le hace caso y le dice que él sabe lo que hace.
But Jose doesn’t pay any attention to her and tells her he knows what he’s doing.
Le pregunta que por qué se pone tan nerviosa.
He ask her why she gets so nervous.
No es que está nerviosa, le contesta ella, pero tampoco quieremorirse.
It isn’t that she’s nervous, she replies, but she doesn’t want to die either.
Carmen le pide a José, por quinta vez, que vaya más despacio, que hay demasiado tráfico en el camino.
Carmen asks Jose, for (the) fifth time, to go slower, because there’s too much traffic on the road.
José le contesta que no es la quinta vez que se lo dice, que esla décima.
Jose replies to her that it isn’t the fifth time she’s telling him, it’s the tenth.
En realidad es la décima, pero él no le hace caso; eso es lomalo.
It really is the tenth, but he won’t listen to her; that’s the trouble.
Él le dice que más despacio no puede ir.
He tells her he can’t go any slower.
Pero ella no deja de decirle y a cada esquina que llegan le diceque se fije bien.
But she doesn’t stop telling him, and at each corner they come to, she tells him to watch out.
Le dice que tenga cuidado con los otros carros, que esto, queeso, que lo otro…
She tells him to be careful with the other cars, this and that and the other…
Lo molesta tento que por fin José no puede más y le dice:
She bothers him so much that finally Jose can’t (stand it) any more and says:
¡Ah, caramba! ¡No molestes tanto! ¡Qué lata eres tú¡ ¿Por qué no manejas tú, mejor?
Oh, darn it! Don’t bother so much! You sure are a nuisance! Why don’t you drive, (better)?
¿Qué es eso? ¿Quién cree usted que soy yo para tratarmeasí?…le dice ella tratándolo de ‘usted’.
What’s that?! Who do you think I am to be treated that way?! she tells him calling him ‘usted’.
José le pide que lo perdone, pero Carmen no contesta nada y ninguno de los dos habla más.
Jose asks her to forgive him, but Carmen doesn’t reply at all and after this neither on talks any more.
Al llegar a la casa de Carmen, José le pregunta si puede entrarun momento.
When they arrive at Carmen’s house, Jose asks her if he can come in a moment.
Pero Carmen dice que no.
But Carmen says no.
José pregunta que por qué no.
Jose asks her why not.
Ella le contesta que porque no, y le dice: ‘buenas noches, señor.’
She replies to him ‘because not’, and tells him: ‘good night’, sir’.
Carmen le dice que no hizo nada, al mismo tiempo que abre lapuerta del carro.
Carmen tells him he didn’t do anything, at the same time that she opens the car door.
José le pide que lo deje acompa!narla hasta la puerta, por lo menos.
Jose asks her to let him accompany her to the door, at least.
Pero ella le dice que no, que gracias, y que no necesita molestarse.
But she says no, thanks, and that he doesn’t need to bother.
Pero Carmen…-le dice él.
‘But Carmen…,’ he tells her.
Buenas noches -contesta ella.
‘Good night,’ she replies.
¿Te veo mañana?
‘Shall I see you tomorrow?’
Lo siento mucho, tengo un compromiso.
‘I’m very sorry, I have an engagement.’
Francamente yo no entiendo a las mujeres -dice José cuando Carmen cierra la puerta.
‘Frankly I don’t understand women’, says Jose when Carmen shuts the door.
