Unit3 Ls 2 Vocab Flashcards
Weathering
wear away or change the appearance or texture of something by long exposure to the air
Erosion
the process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents
Deposition
the geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to a landform or land mass
Igneous rock
one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava
Sedimentary rock
types of rock that are formed by the deposition and subsequent cementation of that material at the Earth’s surface and within bodies of water.
Metamorphic rock
a type of rock which has been changed by extreme heat and pressure
Rock cycle
an idealized cycle of processes undergone by rocks in the earth’s crust, involving igneous intrusion, uplift, erosion, transportation, deposition as sedimentary rock, metamorphism, remelting, and further igneous intrusion
Uplift
vertical elevation of the Earth’s surface in response to natural causes
Subsidence
become less intense, violent, or severe
Rift zone
A large area of the earth in which plates of the earth’s crust are moving away from each other, forming an extensive system of fractures and faults
