What is compass rose
Compass rose is used to navigate direction. It has three sets is points Cardinal which is south, west etc there is ordinal which is northwest, southeast etc there is subordinal which is north northeast west southwest etc
What are times zones
Sir Sanford Fleming created time zones to have uniformity. From west to east their are pacific, mountain, central, eastern, Atlantic and Newfoundland each has a one hour increase west to east Newfoundland is half hour each zone is 15 degrees wide

Used with military times uses all symbols. Black=buildings blue=water white=unused area pink=developed area green=grassland red=highway orange=roads brown=contour lines
What are contour lines
Used to show differences in elevation distance between contour intervals is the same

What is scale? What are the types?
Scale means a small distance in a map is a large distance in real life. Use metric system (5 decimals)Three types include direct statement 1cm=50km so 8cm=400km, line scale |—|—|—|—|, representative fraction 1:5000

Latitude and longitude
Latitude are imaginary lines on the earth that run east and west but measure north and south our coordinates are 43 degrees N and 79 degrees W major latitude lines include the equator, Tropic of Cancer, Tropic of Capricorn, arctic circle north and south. Longitude are lines that run north and south but measure east and west. Major lines include the prime meridian which is 0 degrees. 180 degrees from the prime meridian is the international dateline
Essentials of a map and their importance
Legend: provides explanation or definition for symbols on a map
Compass: helps us orient ourselves
Scale: helps us connect distance on a map with the real world helps to interpret the size of land masses
Title: helps us identify the major theme of the map
Labels: helps us to identify the major aspects of the map
Colour: blue for weather make the map nice to look at
Date: prior to July 1st 2000 Canadian maps did not include Nunavut
Border: helps us designate the area we are looking at
