Proper posture
back straight.
head up, chin in and looking straight ahead.
shoulders relaxed.
tummy in.
weight balanced evenly on your two feet.
knees straight.
Curved fingers
allows you to play with more freedom and less tension.
Finger numbers
Your index fingers are 2, your middle finger is 3, the ring finger is 4 and your pinkies will be 5.
Note names (treble & bass)
Treble is a term for higher sounding notes.
Quarter note
A quarter note is one beat. An eighth note is one half beat. A sixteenth note is one fourth beat.
Half note
a note played for half the duration of a whole note (or semibreve) and twice the duration of a quarter note (or crotchet).
Bar line
vertical lines that cross staves in order to show how music is divided into bars, according to the time signature.
Measure
a segment of time within a piece of music defined by a given number of beats
Double bar line
two single bar lines drawn close together, separating two sections within a piece, or a bar line followed by a thicker bar line, indicating the end of a piece or movement.
Treble clef
to signify higher-pitched notes in contemporary musical notation
Whole note
4 beats is a whole note.
Bass clef
G, B, D, F, A, and the spaces A, C, E and G
Grand staff
the combination of two staves, treble and bass clef, joined together with a bracket
Bracket/brace
thick straight and curved lines in the left-hand margin that show instrument groupings.
