What is Globalization?
The trend towards greater interconnectedness.
What is Individual vs. Collective identity?
Individual identity talks about values, beliefs, ideas, style, hair, clothing choice, hobbies, etc. Collective identity talks about gangs, sports fans, neighborhoods, communities, gender, religions, ethnic groups, etc.
What are the dimensions of globalization?
Economic, Political, Social, and Environmental.
What are the forces of globalization?
They help Canadians enjoy foreign products, Economic, political, environmental, and social globalization.
What is Americanization?
The action of making a person or thing American in character or nationality.
What is media concentration?
A process wherein fewer individuals or organizations control shares of the mass media.
What is media convergence?
Working together to create the same message.
What is the digital divide?
Divide between people who have access to technology and people who don’t have access to it.
What is assimilation?
The cultural identity of a minority group disappears as its members take on the identity of the other culture.
What is marginalization?
The act of putting individuals or groups in a powerless position in society.
What is homogenization?
Erasing of cultural differences where people become similar. Something that is all the same.
What is accomodation?
Involves accepting and creating space for one another.
What is hybridization?
Blending of different cultural traits and elements of different cultures.
What is aculturation?
A process of mutual adaptation between persons or groups, usually achieved by reducing hostility.
What is revitalization?
Process of reclaiming and re-evaluating cultural practices, traditions, and values that have been lost due to historical factors.
What is affirmation?
a statement or proposition that is declared to be true.
What is universalization of pop culture?
The process of a large number of people experiencing the same culture. Examples are news, entertainment, education, data, or promotional messages through the world.
What is global culture?
A whole way of life of the world’s people, and also cultural works that are produced and commonly consumed by people who live within and across many countries, not just one country.
