sagittal plane (planum sagittalis)
vertically oriented plane that divides the body into left and right.
median plane (planum medianum)
sagittal plane that courses through the midlines of the body. sometimes called the midsagittal plane.
coronal plane (planum coronalis)
any horizontally oriented plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Transverse plane (planum transversus)
horizontally oriented plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
medial (medialis)
towards or relatively closer to the median plane
lateral (lateralis)
away or relatively farther from the median plane
anterior (anterior)
toward or relatively closer to the front side of the body
posterior (posterior)
toward or relatively closer to the backside of the body
superior (superior)
toward or relatively closer to the top of the head
proximal (proximalis)
toward or relatively closer to a reference point
ipsilateral
indicates a structure or position on the same side of the body
contralateral
implies a position on the opposite side of the body

distal (distalis)
away from a reference point
external (externus)
near the surface of something
internal (internus)
away from the surface of something
superficial (superficialis)
near the surface of the body
deep (profundus)
away from the surface of the body
dorsal (dorsalis)
towards the back
ventral (ventralis)
towards the belly
palmar (palmaris)
towards the anterior aspect of the hand
plantar (plantaris)
towards the sole of the foot
middle (medius)
a position between superior/inferior, anterior/posterior, proximal/distal, superficial/deep.
intermediate (intermedius)
a “side to side” position between medial and lateral structures.
radial (radialis)
towards the lateral aspect of the entire superior limb. thumb
ulnar (ulnaris)
toward the medial aspect of the entire superior limb. pinky
tibial (tibialis)
towards the medial side of the inferior limb
fibular/peroneal (fibularis/peronealis)
towards the lateral aspect of the inferior limb
