Relocation Diffusion
The spread of an idea by physical movement of people from one place to another.
Culture
A learned and shared behavior, or “way of life,” within a group of people.
Expansion Diffusion
The rapid widespread diffusion of a feature or trend throughout a population.
Hierarchical Diffusion
The spread of an idea from people of authority or power to others.
Cultural Syncretism (Cultural Convergence)
When components from different cultures collide to form a new idea to satisfy a society’s needs.
Cultural Syncretism (Cultural Divergence)
When cultures become increasingly dissimilar over time.
Cultural Hearth
Location on the earth where specific cultures began; the origin.
Innovation
The act or process of introducing new ideas.
Local/Folk Culture
Culture traditionally practiced by small groups or communities.
Popular Culture
Modern day events or the mainstream of a given culture; fads, trends, or icons.
Universalizing Religions
Religions that attempt to appeal to all peoples, regardless of location or culture. Ex: Christianity, Islam, Buddhism.
Ethnic Religions
Religions that people are born into, remain identified with a specific ethnic, tribal, or national group. Ex: Judaism & Hinduism.
Buddhism
- Related to Hinduism and shares many of the same basic beliefs.
- Developed about 563 B.C.
- Its founder, Siddhartha Gautama, is called the Buddha, or Enlightened One. NOT A GOD.
- Reincarnation.
- Universalizing.
Christianity
- Evolved from the teachings of Judaism.
- Monotheistic.
- Based on the teachings of Jesus Christ.
- Old and New Testament.
- Universalizing.
Hinduism
- One of the oldest religions in the world.
- Has no founder and is based on traditions that developed over a long period of time.
- Reincarnation.
- Ethnic.
