Phenomenon
an event related to how the world and universe work
Model
any representation of a system, or its components, to help one study and understand how it works
Axis
the imaginary line around which an object spins, or rotates. Earth rotates around an axis that runs straight through Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole
Plausible
consistent with evidence
Rotate, Rotation
to turn or spin around an axis
Time zone
a region throughout which the same standard time is used
Angle
the space between two intersecting lines or surfaces
Equator
an imaginary circle that divides Earth into two halves called the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere
Hemishphere
One half of a sphere
Revolution/Orbit
a complete circle made by a planet around a sun or by a moon around a planet
Revolve
to travel around another object in a circular or elliptical path
Crescent Moon
the phase of the Moon in which the lit proportion of the Moon visible from Earth’s surface is less than a half circle. Crescent Moons occur right after and right before the new Moon
Full Moon
the phase of the Moon about 14 days after a new Moon in which the complete lighted portion of the Moon is visible from the Earth’s surface & appears as a full circle
First-Quarter Moon
the phase of the Moon, occurring about 7 days after the new Moon, in which the lighted portion of the Moon is visible from the Earth’s surface & appears as a half-circle
Gibbous Moon
a phase of the Moon before or after it is full, when more than half of its disk is illuminated
Last-Quarter Moon
the phase of the Moon, occurring about 7 days after the full Moon, in which the lighted portion of the Moon is visible from the Earth’s surface & appears as a half-circle
Lunar Cycle
the revolution of the Moon around Earth that produces the changing phases of the Moon. One complete lunar cycle takes about 29.5
New Moon
the phase of the Moon about 14 days after a full Moon in which none of the Moon is visible fro`m the Earth’s surface
Waning
the phases of the Moon when the illuminated portion visible from Earth is decreasing
Waxing
the phases of the Moon when the illuminated portion visible from Earth is increasing
