unit B:plants for food and fibre Flashcards
what is a living resource
living things that can be used for human needs
what is sustainability
using resources in a way that they can be used in the future
what are ways that is unsustainable
killing bison for sport and clear cutting without replanting
what is food
we eat plants all the time and they are important for a healthy diet
what is fibre
fibre can be used to make cloth and paper
what else can be used for
glue and rubber
the plant role of oxygen
plants take in carbon dioxide and produces oxygen for other living organisms to use
the plant role of shelter
animals and humans use shelter
plants role food
many animals eat plants but even those that dont get energy from animals do
plants role erosion control
roots hold soil together to prevent erosion
what is stamen
male part of the flower that produces pollen
what is ovary
the female part of the flower that contains an ovule(grows into a seed when pollinating.)
What is pollination
process where pollinators (like bees)move pollen from the stamen to the ovary
what is vegetative reproduction
reproduction of plants that doesn’t involve seeds
What is transpiration
Evaporation of water from the surface plant.
what is capillary action
water attracts its self and moves up the stem
what is osmosis
water from the soil enters the roots (where there is less water)
what is chloroplasts
structure in a leaf where photosynthesis occurs
what is the formula for photosynthesis
water+carbon dioxide+energy=sugar+oxygen
what is the formula for celluar respiration
food+oxygen=water+carbon dioxide+energy
What is light
all plants need light, some more or some less
What is water
all plants need but some can die from to much water
what is nutrients
substances that provide the energy and materials that plants need to grow.
what is space
some plants need more space than others
why would a cactus need a thick stem
to store water for photosynthesis.
why would a sunflower need big leaves
they need it to get a lot of sunlight for photosynthesis
why do plants produce sweet tasting foods
it makes it look more appetizing for a bird or deer to eat to spread its seeds
what does fertilizer provide plants with
nutriense
what are pores
tiny openings in a membrane that only allow some substances to pass through
what is concentration
the amount of something in a solution.
what is diffusion
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
how is diffusion used in a plant
it allows carbon dioxide to move into plant cells and oxygen to move out of plants cells.
