unit b Flashcards
what are the two pathways for speciation?
divergence and transformation
divergence is:
when one or more new species arise from a parent species that continues to exist
transformation is:
when new species result from accumulated changes in a population over time (mutations/adaptations)
the original species is gradually replaced
what is adaptive radiation?
the diversification of a common ancestral species into a variety of differently adapted species
what is gradualism?
the model which states that change occurs slowly, in a linear fashion, and large changes occur as a result of the accumulation of many small changes.
what is punctuated equilibrium?
the model that suggests evolutionary history consists of long periods of equilibrium, interrupted by quick periods of speciation
