Unit A: Section 3.0 Flashcards
What affects a flow rate?
How thick or thin it is and the viscosity
What determines the viscosity of a substance?
The internal resistance or friction between the particles
What factor has an affect on viscosity?
Temperature
How can viscosity be measured?
Using the ramp test
What is density?
The amount of matter in a given volume
What density of a substance depend on?
It depends on the particles of a substance and wether it is a solid liquid or gas
What is the formula for density?
Density (d) = mass (m) / volume (v)
Why can ships float?
Because they contain a large quantity of air and the average density of everything is lighter than the density of water
Density does not change?
Density does not change as long as the temperature stays the sane
If you hear up substance the density changes because?
As energy is added the particles move quickly and farther apart, thus increasing the volume. The density increases because mass remains constant but the volume increases
What is buoyancy?
It is the tend act of a substance to float
Why do buoyant objects float?
They take up space in a fluid, pushing some of it away of displacing it causing them to float, because the fluid pushes back against the force of gravity
What is the buoyant force?
The buoyant force pushes objects upward
What is a flow rate?
How quickly a fluid can flow
