Unit A Flashcards
Knowledge
What is a chemical bond
A chemical bond is a bond that keeps elements together with a force calling “intermolecular forces”
What is an ionic bond
An ionic bond is a chemical bond with a metal and a non metal which together shares their electrons to satisfy each others valence orbitals
What is a covalent bond
a covalent bond is a chemical bond between molecular compounds
What is electronegativity
Is the ability of an atom being able to attract electrons
in the context of electronegativity how could u differentiate ionic, polar and non polar
Ionic: above 1.7 en
Polar: more than 0.4 en and less than 1.7 en
Non polar: below 0.4 en
What is polarity?
Polarity is when there is a slightly positive charged side and a slightly negative charged side because of the unequal distribution of electrons
How do we know if something is polar
if there is lone pairs or if the shape is not symmetrical
How do we know if something is non polar?
if there is symmetry
explain what a valence electron and how its important for bonding
A valence electron is an electron orbiting on the most outer shell of an atom. These are important in bonding because they are the reason different atoms interact with each other. Valence electrons are shared between two different atoms in order to become stable.
Difference between intramolecular and intermolecular forces
Intramolecular is what holds the atoms together when bonded while intermolecular is the attraction or repulsion between molecules
What is a hydrogen bond
is a strong type of intermolecular force and is when hydrogen directly reacts with either fluorine, nitrogen or oxygen
What is London forces
What is Dipole Dipole forces
What is Lewis dot diagrams?
