Modernization
The process of making a system more modern.
Industrialization
The process of moving towards industrial production generally through assembly lines and factory production.
Assembly line
Credited to Henry Ford, a process of making a product a piece at a time. One worker is responsible for only one part of the finished product.
Teapot Dome Scandal
Teapot Dome Scandal, in American history, scandal of the early 1920s surrounding the secret leasing of federal oil reserves by the secretary of the interior, Albert Bacon Fall.
Corruption
Bad business practices, generally illegal and only beneficial to the owners of the company.
Laissez Faire Capitalism
Allowing companies to earn as much as they want in whatever manner they wish with little to no government involvement.
Social Darwinism
The belief that only the strong survive as applied to economics. Basically if you are poor, you deserve to suffer.
Gospel of Wealth
Extremely wealthy Americans have a responsibility to spend their money to benefit the greater good.
Andrew Carnegie
Scottish American industrialist and philanthropist who wrote the “Gospel of Wealth”
Populist
farmers, laborers and middle class activists working for economic change in late 1800s.
Unions
Groups of employees who join together to protest for better pay, benefits, etc.
Progressive
early 1900s movement focused on ending political corruption and reducing the power of corporations
Booker T. Washington
African American educator and author who focused on education for black people (founded Tuskegee Institute)
WEB Debois
Most influential African American advocate of his time, co founder of the NAACP, advocated for full equality for African Americans.
Jane Addams
social worker, feminist and women’s suffragist who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931.
