Define a Legal Description
A detailed way of describing land for a deed or mortgage

Define Metes & Bounds
Metes means distance, bounds means directions
It relies on a properties physical features to determine boundaries and measurements
Where does a Metes and Bounds system start?
At a designated place called a Point of Beginning

Boundaries that are recorded by referring to landmarks
Define Rectangular Survey System
Is based on principle meridians and baselines
What are the divisions used in a Rectangular Survey System?

Quarter Sections
Define Townships
Lines running east and west, usually 6x6 square miles
Define Ranges
Lines running north and south, usually 6 mile wide strips parallel to the miridian
Define Sections
A 1 square mile/640 acre plot of land, there are 36 in a township
Define Quarter Sections
A quarter of a section or 160 acres

Define Correction Lines
Every fourth township line, needed due to the curvature of the earth

Created by correction lines, these irregular areas hold fractional and standard sections
